My family owns a beautiful 34-acre farm on a 117-acre property in Lancaster Virginia – Edgehill Farm. It is currently being farmed by a tenant farmer who has been farming the land conventionally for decades and is not interested in shifting to regenerative practices – although he practices no till. We are looking to partner with someone to farm it regeneratively* for profit with my financial and technical support, and with a cost- and profit-share arrangement that is favorable to the farmer. Our main goal is to restore the health and biodiversity of the land while providing a livelihood for a regenerative farmer. I am a lifelong environmentalist with a PhD in environmental engineering science and a career in high-tech corporate sustainability. I have lived in California since 1991. My regenerative farming journey began in 2018 when I read Gabe Brown’s book, Dirt to Soil and became obsessed with the idea of healing the earth using regenerative practices. Since then I have completed training in regenerative farming practices through the Soil Food Web (www.soilfoodweb.com) and am working towards a consulting certification to help farmers convert to regenerative practices. Starting in mid-2022, I have undertaken a project to convert 2.5 acres of our farm to regenerative practices with a goal to convert the entire 34-acres. I have invested in equipment such as a 54 HP tractor, electric gator, crimper, biological soil drench sprayer, and composting equipment. The property also has a barn, water well, and electric. For the past three growing seasons I have planted multi-species cover crops and done biological soil drenches to restore the soil microbiology and build up the soil organic matter. My expectation is that by next spring (2024) the soil will be sufficiently healed on the 2.5 acres to plant a cash crop without the need for chemical inputs or tilling. Ideally, in this partnership, the farmer would be responsible for the farming operations including selecting the cash crop(s), planting, harvesting, marketing, etc. We are open to the possibility of transitioning ownership of the property so long as we are certain our partner shares our vision of ensuring the long-term health and biodiversity of the land. * No-till, living roots in the ground year round, multi-species cover plants, no chemicals (fertilizer, herbicide, pesticide, fungicide) or only when absolutely needed.

Root and Bloom Fellowship

The Root and Bloom Fellowship is an advocacy and power-building educational opportunity for 25 farmers across the country. Organized into two major phases, ROOT and BLOOM, fellows will explore how many of the challenges young and BIPOC farmers face nationwide are deeply woven and rooted in federal agriculture policy. Progressing through the fellowship, fellows will explore the ways those same policies and power dynamics play out in their communities and regions, blooming into new opportunities, positions of power, local relationships, and projects to make change at home. Over 9 months, from September 2026 to June 2027, Root & Bloom fellows will meet (virtually) for bimonthly sessions that will foster relationships amongst the geographically diverse cohort, allow space to dive deep into topics like organizing, advocacy, power analysis (and so much more!), and ultimately culminate in fellows pursuing leadership positions. Fellows will receive stipends for their time spent on program activities, and we estimate this fellowship to be a 4-6 hour per month time commitment.
